Abstract:

Virtual Surgical Planning in Orthognathic Surgery

Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP) has become an essential component of contemporary orthognathic surgery, enabling accurate three-dimensional assessment, simulation, and execution of complex surgical procedures. This hands-on workshop provides participants with a structured approach to the digital workflow used in orthognathic surgical planning.

The program covers patient data preparation, image registration and head orientation, TMJ and airway assessment, virtual osteotomy planning, maxillary and mandibular repositioning, soft-tissue prediction, and the design of surgical splints and patient-specific guides. Participants will engage in live demonstrations and guided hands-on practice, culminating in an integrated clinical case that applies the complete digital workflow.

The workshop aims to enhance participants’ ability to incorporate virtual surgical planning into clinical practice, improve treatment accuracy and predictability, and support effective decision-making in the management of orthognathic surgery cases.

Course Objective :

By the end of the Virtual Surgical Planning in Orthognathic Surgery workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the principles and clinical workflow of Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP) in orthognathic surgery.
2. Prepare and orient patient digital data for accurate three-dimensional surgical planning.
3. Assess TMJ morphology, joint relationships, and airway dimensions using digital planning tools.
4. Perform virtual osteotomy planning and simulate maxillary and mandibular repositioning.
5. Evaluate soft-tissue predictions and anticipated postoperative outcomes.
6. Design and assess surgical splints and patient-specific osteotomy guides.
7. Apply the complete VSP workflow to an integrated clinical case through guided hands-on practice.
8. Identify potential workflow challenges and incorporate VSP effectively into clinical practice.
